Row New York Receives Award!
For the past two summers, Row New York has run an adaptive rowing program with NYU's Hospital for Joint Disease's Initiative for Girls & Young Women With Disabilities.
Our Row New York experienced girls work as assistant coaches and help run the program. In the middle picture, you can see Monique Carter (in the front) who is rowing on a full scholarship at Michigan State) and Kennise Farrington (in the back) helping the girls during their first outing in the barge.
Previn, the resourceful person that he is, took the slides off a few of the ergs so the girls in wheelchairs could learn to row on land before heading out in the barge.
We are working with the Initiative for Girls & Women with Disabilities to secure funding which will allow us to buy proper adaptive equipment and train our coaches to work with these athletes.
In the meantime, Row New York was the proud recipient of IWD's Community Partnership Award. A childcare glitch left me bringing our 15 month old with me for the awards dinner, but it was a blessing in disguise as Bea loved every minute of the evening. Except, maybe, the photo opp. As you can see, she doesn't look super enthusuastic. Moments later, though, she was dancing with all the girls from IWD so it was a fun night for all. And we were honored to receive the award!
